Technical SEO
Technical SEO that gives search engines a clear path through your site
Search engines can only rank pages they can find, crawl and understand. Technical SEO deals with everything underneath the content: how your site is built, how fast it loads, how pages link together and whether the right pages are being indexed.
- Crawl and indexing issues found and fixed
- Core Web Vitals measured with real data
- Clear fix lists your developer can use
01 Overview
The foundations every other SEO effort depends on
Technical problems are often invisible from the front end. A site can look perfect to visitors while search engines hit redirect loops, duplicate URLs or pages blocked from indexing.
Crawling and indexing come first. Search engines discover pages by following links and reading sitemaps, then decide which pages to store in their index. Problems at either stage stop pages ranking at all. We check robots.txt rules, XML sitemaps, noindex tags and the page indexing report in Google Search Console to see which URLs are excluded and why. It is common to find important pages left out while thin, filtered or duplicate URLs take up crawl attention, particularly on larger sites or those rebuilt several times.
Site architecture shapes how authority and relevance flow through a website. Important pages should be reachable within a few clicks of the homepage, grouped logically and supported by descriptive internal links. Alongside structure, we review canonical tags, which tell search engines your preferred version of a page, and redirects, which should send old URLs straight to their replacements rather than through chains of hops. Broken links, 4xx and 5xx errors, soft 404s and duplicate content all dilute signals and waste crawl activity, so each one is logged and prioritised.
Page experience matters too. Google's Core Web Vitals measure loading (Largest Contentful Paint), responsiveness (Interaction to Next Paint) and visual stability (Cumulative Layout Shift), using data from real Chrome users where enough is available. Google predominantly uses the mobile version of a page for indexing, so mobile performance gets particular attention. Where improvements need design or development work, we can handle them through our web design service or provide a clear brief for your existing developer.
Structured data completes the picture. Schema markup in JSON-LD helps search engines interpret your business details, services, products and articles, and can make pages eligible for rich results. Eligibility is not a promise of display, and markup must accurately reflect what is visible on the page. Technical reviews often uncover issues that feed straight into a wider SEO audit, so the two services frequently work side by side.
02 Benefits
What fixing the technical side achieves
-
01
Important pages get indexed
Removing crawl barriers and indexing conflicts means the pages you want to rank are actually stored and considered by search engines, rather than quietly excluded without anyone noticing.
-
02
Stronger signals, less duplication
Consolidating duplicate and near-duplicate URLs with canonicals and redirects focuses ranking signals on one version of each page, instead of splitting them across several competing addresses.
-
03
Faster, more stable pages
Improving loading, responsiveness and layout stability helps visitors on slower mobile connections and older devices, and supports the page experience signals Google considers alongside content relevance.
-
04
Safer migrations and redesigns
Proper redirect mapping and pre-launch checks protect the visibility you have already built when you change platform, restructure your URLs or launch a new design.
-
05
Fewer surprises in Search Console
Regular monitoring catches new errors, sudden drops in indexed pages and security or manual action warnings early, before they have time to affect your enquiries.
-
06
Content and links work harder
When the foundations are sound, new content is discovered and indexed more reliably, and links pointing at your site pass value to the right pages instead of broken or redirected URLs.

Site architecture and internal linking
An assessment of click depth, navigation, URL structure and internal link distribution, with recommendations to bring priority pages closer to the surface.
-
Core Web Vitals review
Field and lab data for Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint and Cumulative Layout Shift, with the scripts, images and templates causing problems identified.
-
Canonical and redirect audit
Checks that canonical tags point to the correct preferred URLs, that redirects use the right status codes and that old URLs resolve in a single step.
-
Structured data implementation
Validation of existing schema and new JSON-LD markup for organisation, local business, service, product or article content, tested against Google's rich result requirements.

Prioritised fix list
Every issue ranked by likely impact and effort, written clearly enough for a developer to action, with support available while fixes are implemented and verified.
04 Process
How we approach a technical SEO project
Every engagement starts with understanding your goals and the current state of your search presence. No templated packages.
Start with a free audit-
01
Access and baseline
We connect to Search Console, analytics and, where possible, your CMS or hosting, and record current indexing, performance and error levels so improvements can be measured accurately later.
-
02
Crawl and diagnose
A full crawl is run and cross-checked against Search Console and server data. We look for patterns, such as one template generating duplicate URLs, rather than listing thousands of individual symptoms.
-
03
Prioritise by impact
Issues are grouped and ranked. A sitewide canonical error or a blocked section of the site comes ahead of a handful of missing alt attributes, so development time is spent where it counts.
-
04
Fix and verify
We implement fixes directly where we have access, or work alongside your developer. Each change is checked after release, because fixes tested on staging do not always behave the same way in production.
-
05
Monitor and maintain
Ongoing crawls and Search Console monitoring catch regressions after plugin updates, content changes or new releases, which is when fresh technical problems tend to appear.
05 Who it is for
When technical SEO makes the biggest difference
-
Scenario 01
Traffic fell after a redesign
A business that launched a new website and saw organic traffic fall, often because old URLs were not redirected, pages were left set to noindex or the internal linking changed significantly.
-
Scenario 02
Pages that will not index
A site where new service pages or blog posts sit in Search Console as "crawled, currently not indexed" or "discovered, currently not indexed" for weeks, with no obvious reason why.
-
Scenario 03
A slow, jumpy site on mobile
A content-heavy site or booking platform where pages load slowly on phones, layouts jump as images and adverts load, and visitors give up and leave before the page has even become usable.
-
Scenario 04
Large or ageing websites
A site with thousands of URLs, years of accumulated content or several previous rebuilds, where duplicate pages, redirect chains and orphaned content have quietly built up over time and nobody owns the clean-up.

Core Web Vitals are three metrics Google uses to assess page experience: Largest Contentful Paint for loading, Interaction to Next Paint for responsiveness and Cumulative Layout Shift for visual stability. Google treats a page as good when LCP is within 2.5 seconds, INP is 200 milliseconds or less and CLS is 0.1 or less, measured at the 75th percentile of real visits.
It can help, but it is rarely the deciding factor on its own. Google has said page experience is one of many signals and that relevant, helpful content matters more. Faster, more stable pages do tend to improve how visitors engage with your site, so the work is usually worthwhile even where the ranking effect is modest.
A canonical tag tells search engines which URL you consider the main version of a page when similar or identical content is available at several addresses, such as with tracking parameters or sorting options. Google treats it as a strong hint rather than a strict rule, so it works best when internal links, sitemaps and redirects all point to the same preferred URL.
Some fixes, such as updating redirects, sitemaps or meta robots settings, can often be handled in a content management system without code. Others, like improving page speed or changing templates, usually need development work. We can make changes directly where we have access, or provide clear, prioritised instructions for your developer to follow.
A thorough review once or twice a year suits most smaller sites, with lighter monthly monitoring in between. Larger sites, online shops and sites that change frequently benefit from more regular crawls. It is also worth running checks before and after any migration, redesign or major platform update, as these are high-risk moments for visibility.
Structured data can make a page eligible for rich results, such as product prices or review stars, but Google decides whether to show them. Markup must follow Google's guidelines and match content visible on the page. Some rich result types have also been restricted or retired over time, so we focus on markup that remains genuinely useful.
